In February 2015, Tim Richman established Southern Structural Steel of Florida and acquired the assets of Coastal Steel Construction, Inc. of St. Petersburg, Florida. The purchase included corporate offices and a 45,000 sq. ft. structural fabrication plant located in south St. Pete. Richman’s career in structural steel fabrication started three decades ago and spans three states.

His current and past operations include Richman Steel Fabrication, a miscellaneous steel fabricator formed in 1977 and closed in 2020, and Southern Structural Steel, an AISC-certified structural fabricator begun in 1997, located in Smithfield, VA. The president of the Virginia company is Richman’s son, Matthew Richman.

In 2008, Richman partnered with Buddy Dowd and Allen Johnson to form Bear Creek Fabrication, an AISC certified structural and specialty steel fabricator in central North Carolina.

With locations now in three states, the related companies offer expanded capabilities to general contractors and a diverse customer base.

During the years following the acquisition, Southern Structural Steel of Florida has increased employment fivefold, acquired six additional CNC machines – as well as our most recent addition, the VoortmanV807 coping machine – upgraded software and computer networks, and updated the existing facilities.

The dedicated staff is proud to have been the driving force of fabricating well over 5,000 tons of structural steel since Southern Structural Steel of Florida was formed.
